Founder and History
of the School
Kathryn Hume grew up in Arlington Heights,
IL. After four years at
Illinois State and Northern Illinois Universities,
she
moved to Los Angeles and studied with
acting teacher,
Katharyne James Roberts.
In 1978 she founded The Kathryn Hume
Theatre for Kids, relocating the school
to Minneapolis in 1987. It was later
named Express Yourself Academy.

Kathryn graduated from Metropolitan State University in
Minneapolis, with a B.A. in Performing Arts and Education. Her experience includes plays, musicals, improv comedy
shows, commercials, voiceover work, writing, speaking, and
over 20 years of teaching. She has produced and directed many
performances with up to 110 students per show. Now her award-winning
program is based in Austin, Texas, where Hume has appeared in The Laramie Project and as Sister Katrina! at
The City Theatre.
Student Profile
Thousands of students (ages 4 - adult) from diverse backgrounds, including students with
learning and other disabilities, have taken classes from
Ms. Hume. They have gone on to become successful professionals from all walks
of life.
